Lumens: Why you can’t use them to compare LED Bulbs to traditional bulbs.
Are LED’s brighter than Compact Fluorescent (CFL) bulbs? Some people say that LED’s still aren’t as bright as Compact Fluorescent bulbs. Some people say you should switch to LED’s RIGHT NOW because they’re way more efficient. So what’s the real answer? It depends on if you can replace the bulbs with LED floodlight bulbs or if it’s an application that requires “omni-directional” light…this article will explain why.

Wow, nice and insightful post on LEDs and the efficiency. I think with lights it’s like with cameras: Almost everyone uses them but only a few understand the basics. This post helped clarify some terms to me in this area that’s a new territory for me. Thanks!

No problem Daniel. Thanks for stopping by! There’s a lot of misinformation out there and we try our best to dis-spell a lot of those myths!

LED Lighting has the future and the technique for it is rapidly changing. In a few years everybody will have LED Lighting! In 2012 it is not allowed by law to sell regular light bulbs anymore in Europe.. I think it is a good thing. Let’s think about the environment!!

  4. Lighting Equipment Leasing Says:

A lot of people don’t give LED lighting a chance, but the benefits cannot be denied. Low heat output… VERY long life. I have provided financing to some production studios that switched their lighting system over to LED just to reduce the MASSIVE amount of heat that traditional studio lights produce. We are seeing more cities (just recently Los Angeles) changing street lights over to LED, so it’s good to see people giving this energy efficient lighting a chance!

LED lighting is very future, the effect is more than CFL lamps,if LED lighting’cost equel to CFL bulb, that LED lighting will very popular

Hi Jeff, you raise a very good point on comparing brightness. Some producers try to wow us by better specifications to think that a high lumen figure means a better brighter light. Of course they conveniently leave out the fact that its over a 90 degree dispersion, or the colour shift is so high that the light appears blue. As usual there is a race to dominate the market and unscrupulous vendors will use all kinds of tricks to catch the consumer. Yes, let’s press for a standard that is clear to understand and brings the consumer into a better place of awareness. In the meantime vendors such as Eternaleds play a valued role in establishing consumer confidence in an uncertain market place.

Thanks for the comment littlegreenblog. Agreed - there are a TON of vendors out there that have no idea what they’re talking about and inflating lumen output in an effort to stimulate sales. We’re in it for the long haul, and what we’ve found to be the best way is to just SHOW people side by side photos of what they’re replacing - thus showing - light dispersion, color temperatures etc. I guess what they say is true - a picture is worth a thousand words!
